We celebrated Kitty's birthday this year with a Sunday afternoon drive along the Great River Road for dinner with friends and a chance to see some of the bald eagles that nest here during the winter. Kitty saw quite a number of them with Greg's parents earlier in the week, and we weren't disappointed either. With their white heads reflecting the sun low on the horizon, the eagles were easy to spot in the trees along the road between the bluffs and the river. While we didn't see any in flight, there were over 20 close enough for us to get a good look and take a few pictures. This was our best:
It's hard to describe how truly majestic and impressive these large birds are as you watch them. But once you see them, especially in an open environment like this, it's easy to understand why they were chosen to be one of our national symbols.
